New Roads to Good Jobs

Today I announced a plan to improve the roads of Lincoln without any new taxes on residents. I call it my “New Roads to Good Jobs” Plan.

The idea is that the city would create “development districts” around the edge of the city where new sales tax revenue collected in the district would be set aside for streets and other infrastructure improvements, like sewer and water.

Right now Lincoln has more $135 million in street construction and repairs that is going unmet. With my plan much of that would be erased by the sales tax collected in the development districts.

A tremendous advantage of this approach over other options is that Lincoln’s future growth will be paid for by the fruits of its current growth. Success will beget more success and the result will be better roads, more sales for businesses, and consequently, more jobs.

This is only the first of several proposals I will be making to innovate city government. Please contact me if you have any suggestions or comments.
